OPERATION
TOURNAMENT
New to SCACFAS in 2006
are the "Operation Game" (C) tournaments. The first operation tournament
was held in September 2006 to kick off the new SCACFAS academic year. Also
planned for 2006 is a fund raiser utilizing the "Operation Game" (C) format to
help raise toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. Please keep watching for
more information to learn how you can make a child's Christmas dream come true
by supporting.
SURGICAL LABS
SCACFAS’ surgical
labs have been a great success in the past. Our most popular events, they allow
students to practice and refine some basic surgical skills. The club hosts labs
in a variety of topics including knot tying, basic suture skills, and basic
surgical tools. These labs are generally held over the lunch hour in a “lunch
and learn” format.
DR. SEAN GRAMBART LECTURES AT DMU
On November 10, 2006,
the well-respected graduate of Des Moines University, Dr. Sean Grambart hosted a
lecture about Lisfranc's injuries. This riveting lecture outlined the
clinical signs of these devastating injuries and how as podiatric physicians we
can heal these.
On January 19, 2005,
SCACFAS was pleased to host a lecture by Dr. Sean Grambart entitled
“"Evidence-Based Medicine: What it means for the Future of Podiatric Surgery."
Dr. Grambart, an up-and-coming leader in the profession, shared some surprising
and revealing information on the many components of evidence-based medicine.
The lecture identified some inherent flaws in the EBM process, but ultimately
reinforced its significance in the future of podiatric surgery. It remains an
important tool for providing quality health care. Dr. Grambart also shared some
information on ACFAS, and discussed his intensive experience as a resident at
the Swedish medical center in Seattle, WA. It was an enjoyable evening, and was
well attended by CPMS students and faculty. SCACFAS extends its thanks to Dr.
Grambart for his time and effort!
2005 WINTER BOOT DRIVE FOR XOCHIPILLI
In Decemer of 2005, as the chill of winter set in, the officers of SCACFAS spearheaded a fundraising effort aimed to provide winter boots for the students of Xochipilli, an early childhood program serving lower income Hispanic families in southwest Des Moines. Through a generous donation of $1000 from Kim Hinkle, State Farm Insurance and the cooperation of local Wal-Mart stores, the boots were obtained and delivered to the students. A puppet show entitled “The Mystery of the Pink Feet” was also performed. The project was a great success and helped many children who were in need!
